Queens Chapel Road Changes Raise Council Concern

The State Highway Administration’s proposal to close off the median access point at Oliver Street, among other changes, deemed inadequate by city council.

Members of the Hyattsville City Council raised concerns Monday when State Highway Administration representatives updated them on proposed changes to MD 500, or Queens Chapel Road, between East West Highway in the north and Hamilton Street in the south. Under the SHA’s Community, Safety and Enhancement Program, three major changes have been proposed. The project will provide a dedicated bicycle lane labeled by pavement markings and signs, reconstruct the curb to add a 60-inch-wide sidewalk and raise medians between the four northbound and southbound lanes that run throughout the main road, which design engineer Joshua Dupee said will stop drivers coming out of the Queens Chapel Town Center from making illegal U-turns. “This is a very …

I have a better question: When are they going to reopen Queen's Chapel Rd between East-West and Rt 1? Why is this road (Funded with tax payer dollars from everyone in the county) allowed to be used by the dozen or so people who live there and ONLY those people? This road needs to be reopened, ESPECIALLY if the county is going through with that new "upscale" grocery store they want to put in at …   more ›

Turkey Day Tips for Road Safety

Life might be a highway, but who wants to drive all night long to get home for Thanksgiving?

The 411 for travel this Thanksgiving is safety — and if you want to have smooth sailing along the byways this weekend, be sure to plug into 511, the state’s database for Maryland roads information. You can call 511 or visit www.md511.org to find out about major incidents, delays, estimated travel times and weather conditions. The State Highway Administration also is suspending all non-emergency roadwork on SHA-maintained roadways between 9 a.m. on Nov. 23  and the morning of Nov. 28. Emergency response units will patrol metropolitan interstates in case any motorists are stranded and need help.
