Voting Continues for Route 1 Ride Bus Design

Pick your favorite look for the Route 1 corrdior's new circulator—voting ends Sept. 9.

The contest to choose a design for the Route 1 Ride bus is drawing to a close, with voting set to end on Sunday, Sept. 9. Launched earlier this year, the competition received a total of 38 entries from 27 artists. A panel of 14 community jurors then narrowed the field down to three finalists. The winning artist's "wrap" will adorn a new circulator in Prince George's County's TheBus system that's set to run between Mount Rainier and northern College Park. Voters can choose between: The competition is sponsored by the Route 1 Ride Collaborative, a collection of government officials, municipal and county government agencies, area non-profits, and community development corporations. The group's goal is to increase ridership on the Route 1 Ride…

Photos: Beating the Heat Along Route 1

Area residents weren't too dissuaded from enjoying the outdoors during the first scorcher of the summer. Perhaps they're used to it.

Go Hyattsville!

A College Park writer talks about his impressions of Hyattsville's arts district.

Someone's saying nice things about Hyattsville and Patch thought you might like to know about it. College Park Patch columnist Joe Smith wrote a piece today expressing his frustration over what he sees as a prevalence of old, vacant buildings on Route 1 in College Park. "Believe it or not, I’m sick of complaining. You know what they say about doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Yet, during this same two-year period, as I’ve made the occasional trip up U.S. Route 1 to Franklin’s, I’ve watched Hyattsville knock down some its sorry old buildings and build new things in their place, like an “arts district” (that no artist can probably afford) with nice-looking loft-style apartments, and commercial areas with …

The next thing the city of Hyattsville should do is request Pepco include route one in their improvements to the system. They need to start at the northern border and go south and remove all the utility poles. They should be placed underground. It's has been an eye shore for as long as I've lived in Hyattsville. Each time a tractor trailer drives south on route one they rub up against the poles. …   more ›

The "Trashy-ist" Places In Hyattsville

Say it isn't so ... scads of garbage strewn along Route 1 at EYA's Arts District Hyattsville.

Patch editor Sarah Nemeth took these photos of trash left along the west side of Baltimore Avenue at EYA's Arts District Hyattsville and just south. With all the new eateries on the east side of Hyattsville's main drag, will refuse become an issue there? Has it already become one?

Viewfinder: Hyattsville Photographers Strut their Stuff

Locals captured scenes of Baltimore Avenue, from run down storefronts to the new development at Hyattsville's Arts District.

On June 25, nine residents from Hyattsville and nearby Washington, D.C., met up with Patch photographer Chris Suspect for the first ever Hyattsville Patch Photo Walk. The group started at the corner of Route 1 and Queensbury Road and walked 1.2 miles to Rhode Island Reds for the restaurant's closing night party. Along the way the group captured scenes of Baltimore Avenue, from run down storefronts to the new development at Hyattsville's Arts District. From the hundreds of photos that were taken, five were selected from each photographer on the walk. Each helps characterize the state of Route 1, the people the group came accross, and each other.
