SPEAK OUT: How Old is Too Old for Santa Claus?

What is the right age to reveal the truth about the jolly old elf?

It is undeniably Christmas time, as evidenced by the decorated houses, Christmas tree lots popping up and Santas setting up shop in department stores and malls. For many small children, Santa Claus is a big part of the holiday. Kids pose on his lap for photos, write letters will detailed gift requests and try to be on their best behavior to avoid the naughty list. The big guy in red is a hot topic of conversation for those who celebrate and have little ones, which begs the question, when do you reveal the truth about the Santa myth? Do you tell your precocious 7-year-old the truth because she's no longer buying it and you are tired of lying? Do you reveal the truth to your 10-year-old so he doesn't get teased by his friends for being the…

Santa Comes to Hyattsville

Young and not-so-young gather to ring in the holidays with St. Nick at city hall.

Hyattsville's children got to hang out with Santa yesterday during the city's breakfast and lunch with Santa event at the Hyattsville Municpal Building on Gallatin Street. Kids had the opportunity to tell Santa what they wanted for Christmas, as well as the chance to create some cute arts and crafts.  This was the second event of the weekend in Hyattsville designed to ring in the holiday season. The night before, city residents gathered at Magruder Park for the lighting of city's holiday tree.

Meal With Santa: Is Brunch a Bad Deal?

Hyattsville holiday kids event costs too much, councilman said.

This year the City of Hyattsville is again hosting a breakfast with Santa during the holiday season. Because of the large draw in previous years, staff has also planned a brunch with Santa to follow breakfast. The cost of the brunch—about $74 for a family of four—seems high to at least one city councilman. Councilman Tim Hunt (Ward 3) said at a meeting Monday that he was not given full details of the brunch when the council recently was briefed on it. “The final price points … were not indicated in the briefing paper,” he said. “I was surprised at the amount that would be charged for that program. It’s three-to-four times as much as breakfast with Santa. We got the information we got, but I’m still shocked.” The first event is from 9 to 10…

Week In Review

When will it begin to actually look a lot like Christmas is on its way?

Now that Thanksgiving is over, it's supposed to be feeling a little like Christmas is just around the corner. So why does it feel – when I walk outside – like it's just a really stinking cold summer day? Well, maybe it's the absence of fluffy white flakes drifting to the ground like down. Maybe I just don't hear those silver bells ringing yet. I haven't bought a single present yet and haven't begun thinking about what kinds of Christmas cookies to bake. In my heart it doesn't yet feel like the season is upon us, but in my mind, I know it's less than a month away. Here's how I know: This past week, Patch spied Santa Claus, but he wasn't kissing mommy under the mistletoe. He was sitting with children on his lap in front of the Christmas tree…
