Pinsky Says No to Gambling in Prince George's

But admits that a casino at National Harbor would boost the coffers of local government.

Maryland State Sen. Paul Pinsky (D-Prince George's) said that he will not be voting to expand gambling to Prince George's County. In Pinsky's October email newsletter, the senator outlined his position on what he said are the three most important ballot measures facing Prince George's County voters in the coming election: gambling, same-sex marriage and the Dream Act. Pinsky on Question 7—Gambling in Prince George's Pinsky wrote that gambling is an "irresponsible" and "unfair" way to raise revenue. "I have long opposed gambling and personally will be voting no on Question 7," wrote Pinsky. "Because gambling is usually more common among lower income groups, it objectively amounts to a tax on the poor. Gambling revenue is unlikely to result …

Does anyone else find it ironic that the Politicians who, when Erlich was Governor, found everything in the wrold wrong with casinos are now the cheerleades for expanding the same programs? Bill Could Fund Hyattsville Parking Garage

Legislators in Annapolis are working on a bill that could give nearly $1 million in grant money to the city for construction of a downtown parking garage.

Business owners and their patrons complain about a lack of available parking in Hyattsville's downtown Route 1 corridor, so now state legislators have proposed granting $950,000 to the city to construct another parking garage to solve the problem.  It's all a part of Senate Bill 490, sponsored by Sen. Paul Pinsky (D-Prince George's). If the bill passes, Hyattsville, with a $16 million operating budget in 2011, would still have to match the grant. City officials are still working out details like number of spaces and total cost for the parking garage proposed for Hamilton Street, according to a report in The Washington Post. "We have housing, retail, restaurants and other amenities, and we want to have enough parking to accommodate the …

Oh Mike, you know for a fact that the discussion on this issue has just begun, especially when you're talking about the Hyattsville M & C. They will debate this issue into the ground, resurrect it and then talk it into the ground again. Your biggest concern as a citizen should be whether they will take so long discussing the issue that they end up having to give the State back the grant money for…   more ›

Bill Would Allow Yes! to Open Front Doors

Bill would shorten distance from churches where liquor-licensed stores could operate, but only in a narrow section of Hyattsville.

You might not know it, but Yes! Organic Market actually has two entrances.  There's the one you are familiar with, facing the parking lot in the rear of the block. However, there is also a set of doors on the front, facing the sidewalk. But because those street-side entrance to organic grocery store lies within 500 feet of the front doors of Crossover Church, the grocery store can't use them.  State law prohibits stores with Class B liquor licenses, which permit the sale of alcohol to be consumed off premises, to have an entrance within 500 feet of the front door of a church, measured along likely pedestrian routes.  Gary Cha, Alexandria resident and owner of the Hyattsville Yes! Organic Market says the law is outdated.  "It served it's …

I agree with Donald. Yes! is a cheerful, friendly, convenient place to shop. Thanks to Senator Pinsky for helping to further the cause of intelligent development. Fix this law, please!   more ›
