Crime is decreasing, but police still urge people to take caution during the holiday season.
Crime is dropping in Hyattsville, just as it is in other parts of Prince George’s County, but shoplifting remains the city’s most significant crime problem, police say. Shoplifting reports are back up however, according to police reports. Ward 4, which has the highest crime rate in Hyattsville, saw 34 cases of shoplifting last November. That’s compared to 24 in November 2010 and 35 in November 2009. Even so, with the holiday season here, police are urging residents to take caution in shopping centers. Sgt. Chris Purvis, of the Hyattsville Police Department, said the city will begin random patrols through Christmas. “We really try to educate the shopper to not leave items in plain view in their car," Purvis said.
