Soggy Bottom Project Seeks Resident Feedback

Momentum builds behind project to repair streetscape in South Hyattsville neighborhood.

Over the next 60 days, city officials will begin sorting out the finer details of what work needs to be done to address a number of issues plaguing the roads and sidewalks in the Melrose neighborhood in southern Hyattsville.  Currently, along 40th Avenue, Buchanan and Banner streets, the roadways have featured scarred, pot hole afflicted asphalt paving, inadequate and poorly engineered storm water drainage, and sidewalks which are buckled and girdled by tree roots.  Residents say they have been asking city officials to address these issues for years, but are only now beginning to see momentum develop behind a plan to fix their streetscape. Soggy Bottom Project Meeting Tonight

Residents to get update on plans to repair, improve streetscape in South Hyattsville neighborhood.

City officials will be updating residents tonight at a special community meeting on the design progress for scheduled street infrastructure improvements on Banner and Buchanan streets and 40th Avenue.  Those streets comprise one third of a three-part project to improve the condition of the streets, drainage and access to Magruder Park in the southern Hyattsville neighborhood satirically known as Soggy Bottom. To that end, the city is also in the early stages of improving the Magruder Park trailhead at the end of Crittenden Street, and imrpoving the road surface and adding sidewalks in the area of Crittenden and 40th Place.  Funds to design the project have been set aside in this year's budget.
