Week In Review

We're getting to know Hyattsville better and enjoying every moment of it.

This week ended with a lot more glamour than it began with. On the bright side, the state fair began on Thursday with all its fanfare and accoutrements. On the down side, 31-year-old Larry Williams Jr. was fatally shot at the 5400 block of 56th Place in an unincorporated county area just east of Riverdale Park early Friday morning. The school year started on Monday and Marybeth Shea talked to some Northwestern High School students and parents, giving us a sneak peak into the first day. Writer Linda Ellis brought us the story of St. Francis International School – the merger of St. Mark's and St. Camillus schools. Best Of Two Schools

St. Mark the Evangelist School and St. Camillus School merge into St. Francis International School.

St. Mark the Evangelist School has undergone more than just a name change. The school, located on Adelphi Road, merged with St. Camillus School in Silver Spring and both locations are now known as St. Francis International School. "We are combining the legacy of two great schools," said Tobias Harkleroad, co-principal of the new school. Faced with declining enrollments and increasing deficits the Archdiocese of Washington approved the merger earlier this year, Harkleroad said. The schools are less than three miles apart, and both have been in operation for more than 50 years. "This merger will allow us to have the time to refocus and pool resources," Harkleroad said.  This month the first phase of reorganization will get underway. All …
