Young Rapper, Friend Laid to Rest

Leonard Raynod Smith-Matthews, 21, of Edmonston was fatally stabbed on June 30 at Hyattsville's University Town Center. His funeral was Friday morning.

Not much has been said publicly about the quiet, young rapper from Edmonston, but if his funeral Friday morning was any indication, Leonard Raynod Smith-Matthews was a catalyst among those who knew and loved him. A few hundred people came out to First Baptist Church of North Brentwood to remember the 21-year-old whose life was snuffed out in a stabbing on June 30 at Hyattsville’s University Town Center. “The one thing that I found was that he was a young man like any young man who was really just trying to find himself,” said the Rev. Quintin D. Borders of North Brentwood AME Zion Church, where Smith-Matthews attended church. “He never stopped trying and finding a way to touch somebody. He would want each of us here today to sing a new …

The shoe's release was big news for sneaker fans. Cpl. E. Johnson of the Prince George’s County Police said she has heard the rumors about shoes being the motive for the …

STABBING: Hyattsville Mayor Weighs In On Death at University Town Center

Thursday's homicide took place only a month and a half after Marc Tartaro took office as mayor in mid-May.

Thursday's stabbing death of Leonard R. Smith-Matthews at Hyattsville’s University Town Center was the first homicide on record in the city this year and the 60th reported homicide in Prince George’s County for 2011. In homicide situations, county police take the lead while Hyattsville police—the department has not had a homicide unit for several years—serves to assist the county in their investigation. Freshman Mayor Marc Tartaro, who took office in mid-May, said he was saddened by the death of Smith-Matthews. “It’s a concern when something like UTC happens [last night],” Tartaro…

This was over a pair of expensive sneekers. These kids seem to think that life is one big video game. They need to realize that there is no reset button in the real world. I am suprised that it took almost 4 years for this unfortunate act to take place. UTC has been overrun with this type of criminal element. At this rate, I hope the retail shops that are still there will be able to survive the …   more ›
