Mi Patio: What's at Stake?

Examining the possible outcomes of Hyattsville restaurant's pursuit of a new entertainment permit.

Do you want a Mi Patio which can host musical entertainment three nights a week but cannot card or search patrons at the door? Or do you want a Mi Patio which can card and search patrons at the door but could also host musical entertainment seven nights a week? Those are essentially the two outcomes possible in the debate over Mi Patio's special entertainment permit application before the Prince George's County Board of License Commissioners, also known as the liquor control board.  Those who are opposed to Mi Patio's application would effectively be lobbying for the situation at the restaurant to stay as it is now, at least on paper. Per the restaurant's pre-existing exemption to the special entertainment permit, live and deejayed music …

City Hearing Sought on Mi Patio Entertainment Permit

Queens Chapel restaurant wants to hold live entertainment and deejayed music.

The politics of entertainment return before the Hyattsville City Council tonight when city leaders will consider holding a public hearing to gather feedback from residents regarding a West Hyattsville restaurant's request before state authorities to allow live and deejayed music on premises.  The restaurant, Mi Patio, located in the Queens Chapel Town Center at 5420 Queens Chapel Road, has applied for a Special Entertainment Permit from the Maryland Board of License Commissioners, informally known as the Liquor Control Board. On the surface, the situation resembles last month's debate over dancing at Acapulco Spirit, another Queens Chapel Town Center restaurant located around the corner from Mi Patio.  But where last month, the city …

Neighborhood, Police Cooperation Highlighted at Crime meeting

West Hyattsville neighborhood watch efforts hailed by police at community meeting to review city crime stats.

The Hyattsville City Police Department reviewed the year in crime statistics last night at a community meeting held at St. Matthews Episcopal Church on 36th Street in West Hyattsville While the meeting primarily was focused on citywide crime stats, it was also an informal celebration of a new, emerging dynamic in West Hyattsville which has seen a small group of neighbors band together to form, in less than a year, perhaps the most active neighborhood watch association in the city, with regular resident patrols organized by email.  After Hyattsville Police Chief Doug Holland reviewed 2012's declining crime numbers (those numbers were previously reviewed in a January Hyattsville Patch article), Sgt. Chris Purvis, the city police's public …

Neighbor Helps Police Catch Would-Be Burglars

Police pursuing attempted burglary charges against two juveniles.

A watchful neighbor may have helped Hyattsville City Police Department officers thwart a burglary in West Hyattsville yesterday. As a result of the neighbor's actions, and a prompt police response, police are now pursuing attempted burglary charges against two juveniles, a boy and a girl.  It all started around 10:45 a.m. in the 3100 block of Lancer Drive when another Lancer Drive resident saw a young woman walk up to his neighbor's house across the street and knock on the door. Shortly afterwards, a young man joined her on the porch. The duo knocked on the door a second time. Receiving no response, the two walked into the back yard of the house.  Suspicious, the watchful neighbor then called police to report the activity.  The duo were …

First "Handmade on Hamilton" Celebrates Art, Culture

Vendors provided visitors with a variety of unique arts and crafts while performers gave attendees a spectacular show.

For the first time in two years Hamilton Street shut down in West Hyattsville for a festival. This was the first year of the Handmade on Hamilton street fest, which celebrated handmade goods with an international flair. The festival is essentially the reborn International Street Festival with a heavier focus on arts, crafts and culture.  Attendance was less than what organizers had hoped for, according to Abby Sandel, acting director of the Hyattsville Department of Community Services. She estimates that there were about 500 "unique visitors" who came to the event. "We were hoping for double that," said Sandel. "But on the bright side, some of our vendors had great days and we brought a lot of great things to Hyattsville." Those things …

Handmade on Hamilton Kicks off Saturday

New Hyattsville festival celebrates handmade crafts, music and dance with international flair

It's been a long time since area residents had an opportunity to party along Hamilton Street in West Hyattsville, but that's all about to change this weekend with Handmade on Hamilton. Dubbed an "international celebration of craft, music and food", the festival is the resurrected version of the old International Street Festival which graced Hamilton Street for 15 years until  administrative issues put the fete on hiatus after 2010.  Since then, the festival has been restructured with an arts and crafts focus. The centerpiece of the reborn festival is now handmade crafts from around the world. The city has registered more than 40 local and regional artisans, jewelers, potters and more to sell their wares and demonstrate their trade to …

Burgled Resident Thanks Police For Fast Action

West Hyattsville resident says she feels safe in her neighborhood after police quickly locate stolen property.

Hyattsville resident Joann Nichols had four televisions, among other items, burgled from her house earlier this week, but you'd have a hard time telling that from her cheerful demeanor. "I am just so impressed with our police," said Nichols in an interview a little more than a day after her Oliver Street home became a crime scene on Halloween morning.  The reason for her happiness? She has just about all of her stolen property back safely in her home. Officers from the Hyattsville City Police Department, working off an anonymous tip, were able to locate much of her stolen property less than two hours after she reported the burglary.  In the process, police arrested four men on burglary charges stemming from the theft of Nichols' …

Hyattsville police to update neighbors about string of burglaries in West Hyattsville, residents push for more info.

At a community meeting tonight, city police will try to explain to West Hyattsville residents how they are responding to a series of recent residential burglaries in the area.  Some of those residents, in turn, will be pushing for city officials to communicate crime and safety information more effectively with the public.  The meeting was called by city leaders at the request of area residents to discuss residential burglaries in the nearby neighborhood which have locals spooked. Attending the meeting will be Chief Doug Holland and the city police Community Action Team. In the month of September, the last complete month for which city crime data has been released, there were 18 burglaries and one attempted burglaries reported to city …

Craft Fair Registration Deadline Looms

City officials put call out for vendors as application deadline approaches.

Regional artists and artisans have less than five days to register for the inaugural "Handmade on Hamilton" craft fair in West Hyattsville. The event, dubbed  an "international celebration of craft, music and food", will be held on Nov. 3, 2012 from noon to 7 p.m. "Response from applicants has been good so far," said Abby Sandel, Hyattsville's communications manager and acting director of the Recreation and Arts Department. "But we still do have some booths available." The city of Hyattsville is accepting applications through Sept. 14 from vendors who trade in handmade arts and crafts interested in exhibiting at the new festival. All vendors will be juried by the city for acceptance. If accepted, there'll be a $40 booth fee to pay. That …
