I use Queens Chapel/Michigan when I'm headed to upper NW, like Columbia Heights, but if I am headed downtown by car, I usually take Rhode Island Avenue to North Capitol Street. The lights have never really been a problem for me.   more ›

Brentwood Man Displays Christmas Charity

Last years display contained over 16,000 lights.

If it weren't for a feral cat named Wiggles that wandered to Jason Keirns house three years ago, Alley Cat Rescue in Brentwood may not have the holiday support of donated blankets, cat food and toys. Starting next week, Keirns house in the 3400 block of 41st Avenue, will be lit up with a holiday display and a spot for people to drop off supplies to be donated to the cat rescue. According to Keirn, he's outside accepting donations most of the day and evening. Keirns fell in love with cats when he brought Wiggles into his home and now has several other rescued cats. To get an idea of the size of the display, last year Keirns used 14,600 lights. And last year alone he collected over 250 cans of cat food, four bags of blankets, four cat …

PGFD Fight Three Unrelated Fires in College Park, Upper Marlboro and Brentwood

The Prince George's County Fire Department spent Sunday morning trying to extinguish three fires across the county.

It was a busy morning for Prince George's County firefighters after three unrelated fires broke out around the county in the early morning hours, according to fire spokesman Mark Brady.  Two fires were overnight in College Park and Upper Marlboro, while the third broke out this morning in Brentwood, Brady said.  The first fire occurred shortly before 1 a.m. in the 5200 block of Palco Place in the Sunnyside neighborhood of College Park, just north of the beltway, according to officials.  The basement of a two-story home was on fire— so heavily it quickly spread through the upper floors of the home and eventually broke through the roof. The cause of the fire is still under investigation and no one was hurt, Brady said. The next fire began …

Local Residents Help Restore WWI Image

Email lists in Hyattsville, Mount Rainier and Brentwood lit up to help decode some degraded text on a historic image.

Subscribers from a number of area neighborhood email lists helped a local business restore a historic photograph earlier this week.  It all began when Upper Marlboro resident Cheryl Fountain sent a message to email lists in Hyattsville, Brentwood and Mount Rainier asking for help deciphering some text on a badly decomposed photograph from World War I.  In her message, Fountain included a striking sample of the image highlighting the degraded text which she needed help reconstructing. The image itself was a panoramic group shot of a so-far-unknown American artillery unit taken in 1917. The image provided by Fountain showed steel eyed soldiers wearing ranger caps, kneeling, standing and sitting cross legged while staring intently into the …

PG Police Officer Involved in Brentwood Shooting

No one was harmed after the officer discharged his weapon.

A Prince George's County Police officer shot at a man Friday night after the suspect reached for the officer's weapon, according to Prince George's County Police. Detectives from the District 1 Robbery Suppression Team were working an assignment near Rhode Island Avenue and 38th Street when they saw two people, one with a mask, walk into Lowest Price gas station. The detectives thought the suspects were about to commit a robbery so they confronted them, according to police. One of the suspects, later identified as Ryan Keith Dorm, 19, of Cottage City, swung at the  officer and then ran.  The officer caught up to Dorm after a foot chase and the Dorm reached for the officer's gun.
